The third episode of Sky Arts Late will air on 5th November on Sky Arts (Freeview channel 11). Episode three will be filmed at Old Session House and guests will include writer and comedian Katherine Ryan (The Duchess), novelist Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) and Gus Casley-Hayford OBE (Director of V&A East). There will also be performances by Brit Award winner Laura Marling and Tom Grennan.
The topic for the episode is Offense – there’s never been a time when people are more likely to be offended. The clash of generations, identity and social politics means that groups of people are prepped to be offended. There is little room for apology or amends, disagreements and missteps leave reputations in tatters. But is there a role for offence in the arts? How do you make art that interrogates and challenges without coming a cropper? Some of the best-loved arts have been initially regarded as offensive – so are we in danger of losing out on the greats of the future? Have we all turned into Mary Whitehouse?
