Ratings: Top Gear secures strong start for BBC One debut

The brand new series of Top Gear launched on new channel BBC One for the first time last night, and got off to a strong start in the ratings.

Official figures show 3.1 million tuned in to see the revamped motor show’s first outing on the channel. It saw hosts Paddy McGuinness, Chris Harris and Freddie Flintoff present from a huge outdoor stage in front of a drive-in audience, ensuring filming was covid safe.

The show was just beaten by itv’s Family Fortunes which recorded viewing figures of 3.5million, however Top Gear is expected to out perform the gameshow in streaming, with strong numbers expected to watch Top Gear on demand via BBC iPlayer.
