BBC officially confirm Gary Lineker exit

The BBC have confirmed Gary Lineker’s exit from Match of the Day, itAs flagship football programme.

As reported yesterday, Gary Lineker and the BBC have agreed in principle to extend his contract through the 2026 World Cup. Under the new agreement, Gary will lead the BBC’s coverage of the tournament as England aims to secure their first major title since 1966, the Home Nations compete for qualification, and Lionel Messi attempts to defend Argentina’s championship.

Additionally, Gary will host BBC Sport’s coverage of the FA Cup during the 2025/26 season—35 years after he famously lifted the trophy himself as a player.

After 25 seasons, Gary will step down from his role as host of Match of the Day at the end of this season, though he’ll continue with the MOTD Top Ten podcast. BBC Sounds will also become the new home for The Rest is Football podcast, which has gained immense popularity among fans.

Reflecting on the news, Gary said: “I’m delighted to continue my long association with BBC Sport and would like to thank everyone who helped make this possible.”

BBC Sport Director Alex Kay-Jelski shared his enthusiasm: “Gary is a world-class presenter, and we’re thrilled he’ll be at the helm for our World Cup coverage and our live FA Cup broadcasts. After 25 incredible years on Match of the Day, we want to thank Gary for everything he’s brought to the show, which remains a staple for millions of football fans. He will be missed, but we’re grateful he’s staying with BBC Sport to present live football.”

With 33 million viewers last season for Premier League and FA Cup coverage, Match of the Day continues to be essential viewing for football fans, who still feel the excitement each Saturday night when they hear its iconic theme. The show has consistently evolved with changing viewing habits, bringing top-tier analysis and commentary across all platforms. Future plans for Match of the Day will be announced soon.
